The Mombasa county assembly on Tuesday passed a motion to buy tuk-tuk fire engines. The motion sponsored by nominated MCA Zainab Saidi received an overwhelming support from the members.

“Considering that Mombasa has very many informal settlements that are not accessible in case of a fire outbreak, it is important we launch tuk-tuk fire engines,” Saidi said.

She said the Old Town, which is a historical site, has very thin alleys and tuk-tuks are the only mode of transport in the area.

Saidi said fire incidents are common in informal settlements and areas built without proper planning, hence, tuk-tuk fire engines will be of help.

“What happens when there is a fire outbreak in Kibokoni or other Old Town area? We therefore need vehicles that can access all areas” she said.

Saidi said Zanzibar has the same model and it is very effective in fighting fire.

Assembly minority leader Maimuna Salim said there is need to have hydrants drilled in specific areas.
