Jamhuri Magazine: Peter Kenneth Impressed Me! Peter Kenneth Impressed Me! ================================================================================ Tony Ngari on 09/09/2011 20:55:00 About two weeks ago I attended one of Peter Kenneth’s meet the people tour here in the Greater Boston area. I was mainly keen on figuring out who he was, what he had to offer and just to get a feel of how he’s handled his stuff as far as his development record was concerned. I have to say that I was impressed by what I heard and even moved an inch closer to supporting his mission of moving our beloved Kenya country to greatness. In view of the abovementioned, I felt compelled to share with the readers of Jamhuri Magazine some of the highlights that impressed me the most and made me feel that this guy is for real. When he was elected as the MP for Gatanga, he made a commitment to go back to the Gatanga and from his constituents got contacts for their families, friends and relatives from Gatanga living outside the constituency, mainly Nairobi. He followed up by making contact with this group of Gatangans and impressed upon them the need to work together with him and lift Gatanga to success. Together with this Group, they decided to come up with 6 most important agenda items to propel Gatanga to the next great level. This would help to make an impact in the lives of his constituents instead of pouring CDF money into 101 projects with no meaningful impact. 1. Infrastructure: Through the utilization of CDF funds, they have made sure that every corner of Gatanga is accessible come rain or sunshine. This has in turn helped to reduce transport, operating and maintenance costs and businesses and individuals can now invest the saved money. He is also proud to inform us that there are no pot holes anywhere in his constituency which is a huge hallmark compared to the rest of the country. 2. Healthcare: He felt obliged to do something about healthcare in his constituency. Majority of his constituents are poor and they ended up spending most of their money transporting their loved ones to the regional hospitals. Together with his development committee and CDF funds, they have managed to build and equip dispensaries within 5 miles of each other. The dispensaries are fully staffed and fully funded with enough medication to meet the needs of the constituents locally. 3. Schools: The schools are funded and equipped with enough teachers and books and they are now producing some of the best students in the country. 4. Security: Police posts have been built within five miles of each other. These police posts are fully staffed with Administration Police who are well remunerated and provided with enough resources to combat crime in the constituency. He even joked that Gatanga is a “police state.” Due to the heightened level of security, Gatanga is the only constituency in Central Province without the Mungiki menace. This has resulted in increased investor confidence and more and more businesses are gravitating towards his constituency, helping to create employment and eliminate idleness. 5. Environment: They made a commitment to rejuvenate the environment and beautify Gatanga through the planting of trees. This has been an ongoing process, making continuous developments along the way. Trees are made available to the constituents consistently. As a result, Gatanga looks beautiful and the environment has been enriched and in the process helped to conserve important catchment areas. “PK commented that one of his fellow member of parliament once passed by his constituent and intimated to him that there were so many trees that he could not easily see or even identify some of his friends’ houses from the main roads.” 6. Provision of Clean Water: Together, they built a dam and embarked on a project to put a mechanism in place to provide clean water for Gatangans. In return the constituents were requested to make a small sacrifice of contributing to the upkeep of the water project. Through this project, the constituents get clean, treated, piped water, get metered equipment to measure water usage and get monthly bills which they pay promptly to keep the project running. This has helped to create some employment in the process and helped to control and reduce the prevalence of some diseases like typhoid in his constituency.
