“This is the young Obama,” Kalonzo Musyoka said of the young kid who would not be denied his moment with the vice president of the country of his ancestors. Not only did he want a moment but also the right picture taken and not necessarily just one. After he maneuvered his way to where the V.P was he just took charge with his voice calm and full of authority even though he is most likely about 10 – 12 years old. It was a moment cherished.

As Kibaki steers the country ahead to pass it to the next generation, will his name and legacy be damaged forever if there is no control of the government spending? The ink of the National Housing Insurance Fund (NHIF) is not even dry and the Independent Electoral & Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has now shaped itself to the equivalent of a scandal. The IEBC budget for elections is at Kshs 36 billion about Kshs 1,600 per voter or $20 if 20 million are registered. According to published reports it costs the Ghana tax payer $0.70 to elect and if Kenya cost is at $20 this will be about 30 times more for same product. No wonder Ghana economy is growing by 13% when Kenya economy grows at 4%.

Road accidents are on the increase with at least five people losing their lives everyday on Kenyan roads. A grizzly road accident along Kenol-Murang’a road left ten people dead and seven others seriously injured after a lorry transporting stones rammed into a passenger matatu. On the Kisumu-Ahero road, two people died when a bus and matatu collided. And in Nairobi one person died after a car rammed a truck on the northern bypass. These are statistics about accidents that have happened in one day. Many others have been reported across the country. This worrying trend is on the increase with many blaming the heavy rains and the bad state of the roads in many parts of the country.

If anyone could be said to be next in line to be President it would be Kalonzo Musyoka. He is currently the Vice President and thus the next in line. He is also the longest serving elected member and third longest serving member of parliament after President Kibaki having joined parliament as an elected Member in 1963 and Professor George Saitoti who joined October 1983 as a nominated member of parliament and subsequently as an elected member from 1988. Thereafter there is Mudavadi of the 1989 class followed by Odinga, Karua 1992, Uhuru 2001 and Kenneth, Tuju 2002 among those who have experience through serving parliament and various ministries. As the V.P comes to Boston for a Town hall meeting many will be expecting him to take questions like Martha Karua and Peter Kenneth did. In a span of 2 hours Peter Kenneth took over 40 questions in Boston unfiltered and answered all.

A raging debate is going on over President Obama’s support for gay marriages. Those who were most surprised were Africans considering that being gay is far from African culture. The most logical explanation that many could give was that he was looking for votes and it was the right thing to say to attract more votes. In Kenya uproar over whether forms of sexual variance should be decriminalized is ongoing. The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights has recently released a report proposing integration of homosexuals and sex workers. This report has been received with mixed reactions among the public. KNCHR says its main aim is to fight for the rights of this group of people which include discrimination especially in hospitals which is a violation of right to health care services.
