“When I look at the picture of the tallest building in New York City, The 102 floors Empire State building, and then think about the project constructor who delivered the building in 410 days my mind studies more,” says Sam who is planning to relocate back to Kenya 2012 and re-establish his construction business. Sam joined the construction industry in the mid 80’s and in over 20 years has being part of the completion of more than 500,000 sq meters of constructed space as lead constructor, foreman, project manager or civil constructor in Kenya and the U.S.

The construction projects he has worked on include: Kenyatta university hostels, Jomo Kenyatta University staff houses and hostels, private homes, health facility buildings and school projects. His stay in U.S has sharpened his mind as a constructor to understanding settlement systems, hazardous materials and new technologies of building. And says, “I’m confident that I’ll be part of the construction team building the tallest building in Kenya that I project will be completed 2020.”

Sam, like many others who started their careers in Kenya and then relocated to countries abroad, have come to understand how an efficient government system enables the dreams of constructors, architects, entertainers, businesspeople thrive and supply the needs of the country. He notes that the Empire State building would never have been completed in 1 year and 45 days if the systems of government were weak and slow.

These inefficient government systems have seen Kenya have a short-fall of about 2 million houses. With the population growing at 1 million every year this means a creation of demand of about 200,000 new units of houses of 100 sq meters just from population growth. However, Sam who likes the economic platform advanced through the Diaspora for 2012 says his relocation is to be ready to be part of the constructors who will supply the needed construction minds by the platform.  “I plan to create a construction system ready to construct even 5,000 apartments and houses in one year, and deliver 500,000 sq meters by end of 2013.”

Sam says he is happy for the period his brain has been exposed to simple systems in many parts of the U.S. He says he is not surprised to hear Warren Buffet the second richest man in U.S say that the U.S. housing problem was created by an over-supply of houses. Saying it is this production speed that will be needed if Kenya needs to get out of the under-supply.

Looking at 2012 and beyond, Sam whose first career love is construction sees 2012 as the year Kenyans will break from the past. He agrees that it is the year all Kenyans should stop gambling with destiny and make the firm decisions that will progress their way of life and country forward. This decision starts at the voting booth.

As he relocates to Kenya he has planned to offer a special service to Kenyans abroad who have land and would like to explore if the land can be developed. The service will involve inspection of land and giving a free proposal based on the suitable sustainable plan that can be developed in the land. He says once the Kenyan abroad receives the tailored plan then they can decide to go forward or not. Many Kenyans abroad who will take advantage of this service may create new wealth for themselves in the real estate development.
