Senate Aspirant Bishop Mwawasi on University of Taita Taveta County
Bishop Donald Mwawasi, who is aspiring to for Taita Taveta County Senate, has already started the process that will transform Taita Taveta County to become the wealthiest County in Kenya by 2017. The first step Bishop Mwawasi embarked on was to study the Kenya University Project and ask himself, “Can this Project be established in Taita Taveta County?” Since then he has inspired the Taita Taveta Community to come up with the land and talked to Professor Raphael Njoroge of WPI who is one of the main founding professors of the university now been planned for Taita Taveta County. He says, “Taita Taveta will be developing very fast.” And is thankful to his community toward their desire to progress.
Bishop Mwawasi notes that Taita Taveta, even though said to be semi arid county, has a lot of potential. With a total land area of 17,128 sq km the county has about 10,680 sq km as wildlife national reserves that are home to Tsavo East and Tsavo West National parks where millions of wildlife live. He says, “The rest of the land with well thought out plans can be developed into good settlements and big farms.” He debates that with Mount Kilimanjaro feeding the water supply to two Lakes Jipe and Lake Challa and Rivers Tsavo, Voi, Mwatate and Lumi; with many water springs and streams originating from the county hills, Taveta should be a major supplier of food like: cashew nuts, sorghum, peas, millet and maize. He notes that the allocated 26 ranches in the county will be put to economic use as he leads Taita forward.
One of the biggest problems the county experiences is gully erosion after rainfalls. This is a form of water erosion that can lead to severe damage of constructed areas like roads and damage of agriculture farms and produce. Bishop Mwawasi says, “This is one of the reasons he would like to see the Kenya University Project established in Taita Taveta County for with an institution of research a solution can be found.” Indeed the Bishop could have tapped into the solution for the university system of the university will be based on WPI system that is Globally know to have offered solutions to complex issues all over the world through their 26 project centers.
The Bishop also says he intends to ask the institution to work on finding how the human beings conflict with wildlife can be reduced. The conflict mainly emerges when wildlife like elephants will come to farmed areas to feed and ultimately destroy farmed crops and the infrastructure created. Other cases are when wildcats prey on domesticated animals. The senate aspirant for Taita Taveta county debates that once the issue of deforestation caused by the source of energy coming from trees, is substituted by availing other sources of energy and the water supply system is back to normally then the encroachment will not occur so much.
For now Bishop Mwawasi is happy about the possibility of having an International University developed in Taita Taveta County and is confident that Taita Taveta County will be the leader in Tourism, Technology, Education and Food production sectors by 2017.
