During his first visit in the U.S. 2007, Ernest Mungai Kamau an entrepreneur and businessman from Nairobi would propose Diaspora partner with Kenyans in Kenya development. Since then the progress has become the Diaspora University Town project. As he visits the U.S. to advance the project he talks about: the Project, Land, Diaspora University, Medical Hospital, Jobs, Developing Town Houses, Design-Build, Finance and his Diaspora Tour

What do you think of project?
It is exciting. The fact that since independence we have not done projects of developing new towns makes it exciting and challenging. I know firsthand the challenge having progressed this in Kenya over the years since my first visit to the U.S. 2007.

Land and Beacons?
Visiting the land and holding the Beacons of the land with the name Diaspora University felt good. This is a great progress. We now have to put up the buildings and roads to build the town.

Diaspora University?
When I presented the project at WPI 2009 one goal was to achieve an institution that my children could pursue their education. My son is in Malaysia today pursuing university education. The university will provide higher learning opportunities for many years.

Medical Hospital?
When we passed the Kenya Constitution 2010 we provided ourselves with the right of healthcare based on the highest standard possible. We thank the Diaspora doctors, nurses and other professionals for the effort to progress the hospital.

Jobs?
About 1 million Kenyans are entering the Job market. We do not have the luxury of not creating new jobs. In the past 25 years many in Diaspora left Kenya to get jobs created abroad. The project creation of jobs in all sectors will benefit the maturing Kenyans.

Becoming a Developer of Town Houses?
When my sister left for the U.S one question I had then was once she gets a job where would she live? The development of houses enables one to get a place to live in after work. Kenya has a deficit of houses of close to 3 million. The yearly demand is 250,000 units. Thos who become developers through Diaspora University will supply needed houses and make income once they sell the houses.

Design-Build?
I founded Concept Construction to be a Design-Build company 2008. I have transferred Concept Construction to Diaspora University, so the Company can design build the Town. Today the land physical plan is ongoing. The Town Houses design are progressing in the detailed design. The university first buildings are progressing in the detailed design. 12 warehouses that will open site are in the detailed design stage. The roads and infrastructure design are progressing. The material supply planning is ongoing. About 500 persons have expressed interest to be part of the Design and building. Our goal is to produce space as fast as the 240,000 sq m Empire state building produced in 400 days. Our other planning reference is the 600,000 sq m Pentagon building produced in 16 months.

The Finance?
The Kenya finance system has grown since 2009 when we had all banks having deposits of Kshs 1trillion and Loan advances of 721 billion. KCB bank loan advances were Kshs 96 billion in 2009 and by 2016 this had grown to Kshs 353 billion. The current estimate is Kenya loan advances by 2022 for all banks will reach Kshs 5 trillion. Thanks to Diaspora who will contribute Kshs 1 trillion to this growth. Having borrowed to do several contracts I know firsthand how this loan advances expand opportunity. Through becoming a Diaspora University Town House Developer, one will be able to tap this finance. Those who open SMEs will also be able to tap this finance.

Diaspora Tour U.S and U.K?
The tour is for advancing Diaspora University Town. The goal to open opportunities of jobs, supply of building materials and advancing Town House developers. The tour will go to various Cities and Towns in the U.S and U.K.
