Security of Kenyans is in Kenyans Hands
The Al Shaabab has caused a lot of fear not only to tourists at the Coast out to have a good time but also to Kenyans in general. The blast at Mwaura’s Bar located at Mfangano Lane in Nairobi and the second blast at the busy OTC bus terminus, all in one day left many scared. The city of Nairobi almost became deserted with many fearing to come to town lest they become victims. Kenyans need not live in fear and should be the first security system to fight back any terrorists.
Four ways to do this
- Become alert and wary of each action of their neighbors and friends. Since it has become evident that a terrorist could be the person you grew up with, your school mate, relative or even your boss, extra vigilance by everybody could help. It is okay to be suspicious of your friend because that friend could easily blow you up if you are not on the look out. It is safer and better to report one’s suspicions to the police rather than regret later.
- Police have to be prepared to shed off the corruption hat and put on the service act just to save lives. A police officer prepared to take bribe from a terrorist so that he can fail to conduct a search or make an arrest is equivalent to becoming a terrorist. A part from not being patriotic and a proud Kenyan, he too kills his wife, husband, children, nephew, niece, mother and father just as a terrorist does.
- Kenyans should be prepared to undergo searches without getting offended. Security will improve if Kenyans work with guards doing searches, and police officers. Kenyans should also be prepared to give information to members of the Criminal Investigation Department and police whenever called for.
- Efforts should be made to curb smuggling of arms into the country. Foreigners coming into the country and even Kenyans coming back home from foreign countries should be prepared to be screened and anybody looking suspicious or one whose papers are not in order should not be allowed into the country.
Kenyans can stay safe and make our country not only attractive to ourselves but to foreigners, who include tourists and investors, by embrassing new ways of security.
