Professor Wangari Maathai lived a life of planting trees for she understood how trees relate and are part of a healthy environment. She understood the many benefits of planting and nurturing trees. She pioneered in seeing that trees that produce the oxygen that sustains us daily and further remove the carbon dioxide we inject in the air were part of our daily life cycle. She led in giving the economic, social, and environmental benefits that come from trees. Below 12 benefits of trees that shall make us always remember Professor Wangari Maathai:

  1. Trees breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen and by doing so balance and recycle the air as human beings and other living animals breathe in and out oxygen. Thus both trees and humans have to co-exist for each serves the other. Carbon dioxide contributes to the greenhouse effect and as trees breathe in the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere they trap the carbon and release oxygen. They also help clear the air in cities where there are large emissions of carbon dioxide from factories.
  2. Trees control how rain water impacts the soil by fast reducing the speed in which water hits the ground. Second trees help the rain water to penetrate deep inside the soil through the root walls and preserve the water for plants to grow to maturity. Third, trees reduce the runoff of water that would otherwise lead to soil erosion.
  3. Trees are homes to the millions of birds and other wildlife like the bats and leopards that climb and live in trees.
  4. Trees act as a wind break in protecting homes from the fast depreciation due to wind effects and also from the natural wind currents that rotate the earth and supply the earth with water.
  5. Trees absorb sound and reduce noise pollution. Especially for the people living close to busy highways trees will absorb the noise of the cars and reduce noise pollution.
  6. Trees help cool the air around a home and by doing so reduce the energy cost associated with home cooling especially in summer and in regions with high temperatures.
  7. Trees offer humans comfort through shades during a sunny hot day and provides shapes for buildings, streets and homes. Indeed the more the trees in a city the less the energy consumption through heating and cooling.
  8. Trees are said to improve the mental and physical health of residents and workers. Studies say that those people surrounded by trees are likely to suffer fewer diseases as trees trap airborne virus and bacteria thus reducing the spread of diseases.
  9. Children are less likely to suffer from attention disorders if they live around trees for trees provide them with challenges like climbing which encourage them to seek climbing partners.
  10. Trees help increase the value of property as more people are inclined to want to live in surroundings with fresher air supply.
