Google’s Top Searches in Kenya

The song Ligi Soo Remix by musician Rabbit was the top searched item in Kenya in the month of July. This was the only song appearing in the most searched item according to Google trends.

The second most searched item on Google was polyandry, probably linked to the Marriage Bill. This was followed by Bweta La Uhalifu, an investigative crime feature series by a local TV station.

Brenda Wanga, David Makali, Tony Ogunda, Kethi Kilonzo, Eliud Owalo, Mutula Kilonzo Jr, Chelagat Mutai, Princess Farida, Eric Njoka, Agnes Ndetei and Lupita Nyongo were some of most searched personalities.  Amanda Todd, Rosalind Franklin and the royal baby, were the most searched foreign personalities.

According to the Google search engine, the most visited websites were Somali news website shabelle.net, Google Maps, OLX, KASNEB and the Joint Admissions Board (JAB).

The top searches with a political link were Kethi’s case, Mutula Jr and Raila in Kisii. Uwezo Fund, which has been proposed for the youth and women by the Government, also made to the rising searches list.

Sports also comes high in the search list with Masaku Sevens, Lewis Hamilton and Kenya vs Botswana among the leading searches in July.

The top rising searches for the month of July were Joji Baro, Raila in Kisii and kenya vs Swaziland. Rising searches highlight searches that have experienced significant growth in a given time period, with respect to the preceding time period. In this case it means the searches were 3 times more in July compared to June.

Through Google Trends, the public can identify search items that are topical in their locality by the total search-volume.  

Every year, Google reveals the internet "Zeitgeist" (German for "the spirit of the times") through an exploration of the billions of search queries we receive each year. In addition to the Year-end Zeitgeist, which highlights the top trends of 2010, Google also have several tools that give insight into global, regional, past and present search trends.
